About the institution

Cinemovel Foundation is a traveling platform for social communication. Its story started in 2001 in Mozambique, bringing the magic of cinema to the villages, using its impact and evocative strength to talk about Aids and doing what movies have always done: telling stories.

With Ettore Scola as honorary President, over the years this idea has become a project. Morocco, Ethiopia and Senegal are pieces of this story, that Nelson Mandela, during the first project in Mozambique, suggested extending all over Africa, trying to imagine “a trans-African movie project”.

Since this first experience, Cinemovel has designed and implemented participatory mechanism in schools and communities in general with the aim of strengthening education on citizenship, equality, and participation in democratic processes, increasing awareness on human rights with particular reference to younger generations.

The audiovisual language is at the core of this commitment as Cinemovel firmly believes that moving images are fundamental in order to raise responsible and aware citizens. Collective screenings, audiovisual production workshops, documentaries dedicated to self-narration and documentation of reality, film and media literacy are part of the processes, demonstrating the effectiveness of the audiovisual tool in the inclusion and active participation of target groups, particularly those most likely to experience disadvantages and discrimination.
