Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H) was founded in 1983 and has been a pioneer among Germany’s higher education institutions ever since. It has been offering young talents degree programmes with a promising future in the fields of management, economics, politics, society, psychology, nursing, medicine and dentistry. Our mission is to actively shape the social, ecological and economic changes of our society - in a sustainable and just way. This is what we learn, research and work for. The same applies to our unique study concept, which, in addition to exemplary degree programmes, includes the Studium fundamentale, individual supervision at eye level and opportunities to try things out.
The complex challenges society is facing these days also require universities to take a new approach to social responsibility. Our International Center for Sustainable and Just Transformation (tra:ce), founded in 2022, is a university-wide, interdisciplinary research center that explores processes of societal, economic and public transformation towards sustainability, democracy and justice. The Faculty of Management, Economics and Society is driven by the aim of being actively involved in the economy and in society, of taking responsibility, and of developing and proposing solutions for the society of the future. It follows the core principles of Witten/Herdecke University: encourage freedom, strive for truth, and promote social responsibility. We aim at viewing complex issues holistically. As an academic unit, we consider research, teaching and society as elements equally contributing to our university’s achievements. The Reinhard Mohn Institute (RMI) was founded in 2010. In its research, teaching and dialogue, it continues the participative and responsible governance philosophy of its founder Reinhard Mohn. With a core foundation in organization theory, it addresses topics of strategy, management, organization, cooperative governance networks across organizations, and organizing of social processes in economic and societal fields.
