Her research interest in the connection between systemic diseases and periodontitis, looking at how treating this common oral health problem could benefit patients with rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease or diabetes. She combines the study of patients in clinical and cohort studies with laboratory analysis of biological samples to understand the underlying pathways. Prior to joining QMUL, Isabel worked in NHS practice and completed her PhD at the University of Birmingham, where she investigated the clinical, microbiological and immunological links between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis and the effect of periodontal therapy. During her PhD, she collaborated with Oxford University - Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, where she investigated different antibodies against citrullinated proteins, and also collaborated with Ohio State University, analysing the oral microbiome with Purnima Kumar's research group. Isabel was the postgraduate representative at the University of Birmingham and received multiple research prizes and scholarships, including the IADR Periodontal Research Group in 2017.
