Profile

Dr Mark Payne qualified from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2000 as Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). He then undertook General Professional training in the Northern Deanery for a further 2 years followed by a period in General Dental Practice in County Durham. This was followed by a position as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough during 2005. Dr Payne continued the development of his special interest in Restorative Dentistry through his appointment as a Senior House Officer at the Dental Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.

He started specialist training in Periodontology at Queen Mary University of London in 2006 being awarded a Master of Clinical Dentistry in 2009. Then followed period of research study as a Medical Research Council funded Clinical Training Fellow into the bacterial aetiology of Periodontal Diseases. This culminated in the award of a PhD in 2013 with a thesis entitled ‘Dysbiosis of the commensal microbiota drives inflammatory periodontal disease in the mouse model’. As part of this research Dr Payne was honoured by the British Society for Oral and Dental Research with the Senior Colgate Prize in 2011 and was selected to represent the British Society at the International Association for Dental Research General Session in Brazil in 2012. Dr Payne then returned to a period specialist training in Restorative Dentistry until his appointment as a Clinical Lecturer in 2017.

Dr Payne became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in November 2019 and was appointed Clinical Senior Lecturer in October 2020.
