Profile

I graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Dental Surgery from the faculty of Dentistry, University of Khartoum (Sudan). I completed my foundation training in Khartoum Dental Teaching Hospital and subsequently; started my career in oral medicine. I moved to the UK where I achieved a master degree in oral medicine from Eastman Dental Institute – University College London in 2005 and became a member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In 2007, I moved back to Sudan, where I was appointed as a clinical lecturer in oral medicine at the University of Khartoum, Faculty of Dentistry, leading and developing the undergraduate clinical training and teaching modules in oral medicine. I developed special interest in the diagnosis and management of patients with oral manifestations of blistering skin diseases.

I was then funded by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship to obtain a doctoral degree in Germany. During my PhD, I worked with a research group focusing on the development of diagnostic tests and therapeutic modalities for autoimmune blistering diseases in the department of dermatology at the University of Freiburg. I was awarded my doctoral title in 2017 magna cum lauda. I then moved to the UK and had the opportunity to join QMUL as an NIHR academic clinical lecturer and specialty registrar in oral medicine at the Barts and the Royal London Hospital.

Teaching

I am involved in delivering clinical teaching for undergraduate students who attend the oral medicine clinics. I also deliver lectures in oral medicine for the DClin Dent postgraduate students.

Research

Research Interests:

Previously, I had undertaken research in a number of fields related to oral soft diseases and oral manifestations of systemic disease such as oral cancer, HIV and orofacial pain. I developed special interest in the molecular diagnosis and pathogenesis of oral and skin blistering conditions. Currently I am involved in a research project for the validation of the tissue biomarkers (beta defensins) for the screening of oral cancer in high-risk groups in East London.
