AI for student learning and research QMplus course area

Library Services and TELT, together with academic staff and students in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, have created a QMplus course area on AI for student learning and research. It was developed for FMD students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, and has been designed to guide students on what AI is and how it can be used ethically and effectively to support their learning and research.

"The 'AI for Student Learning' resource is a fantastic initiative that empowers our students to harness the potential of AI while emphasising ethical usage." - Dr Pedro Elston

The resource signposts students to the misconduct policy, but emphasises that different modules and programmes might have different rules around the use of AI.

The module uses a variety of different tools including videos, quizzes, Padlet and more. As well as giving information, most of the topics have interactive activities which enable the students to apply what they are learning.

Students are able to download a certificate if they complete the core elements of the module. There is also a range of optional topics, such as revision, and clinic-based learning, which students can return to at relevant points throughout their studies.

Initial engagement has been good, and student feedback mostly positive:

“A lot of the content was related to learning and how we can integrate AI into our education as students at the level we are at. Pros and Cons were clearly highlighted. Good examples of when one can rely on AI to be used and how it can be used as an aid.”

“I found it very interesting learning about the different ways it can be used, such as for brainstorming and assisting with revision but at the same time recognising its limitations and what we need to look out for.”

Please do share this link with your students and have a look through yourself to understand how our students are utilising this resource. You are also welcome to integrate it with your courses.

The module is currently available to all in the IoD and IHSE, Global Health, and a number of other courses across FMD. If you or your students don’t currently have access please contact Paula Funnell (p.a.funnell@qmul.ac.uk) and we can work to get your students enrolled.

We are also inviting students to participate in an educational research project about the use of Generative AI in education. The purpose of this study is to review whether the e-module influences students' perceptions towards accepting and using Generative AI for their learning.

Please encourage your students to take part.
