WISE@QMUL International Women’s Day 2021 Virtual Conference

We at WISE@QMUL are excited to announce that we are hosting a free two-day online conference to celebrate International Women’s Day 2021. On 25th-26th March 2021 we will be joined by many inspiring speakers to discuss two main themes:

  • Ethnic minority women in STEMM.
  • Future directions and priorities for women in STEMM.

This is a unique opportunity to celebrate women in the field of science and engineering who have had remarkable journeys and broken glass ceilings, whilst encouraging young female scientists to pursue careers in STEMM.

Over many years, society has made huge progress on increasing female representation within STEMM, from education to the workforce. For example, the number of females taking Maths at A-level has almost doubled since 2002, and over the last 5 years, there has been a consistent growth of women achieving higher education qualifications in STEMM. These educational increases have fed through to the workforce as women now represent 24% of the STEMM workforce, with 350,000 more women working in STEMM from a decade ago, and 33% of board members of companies. However, women from ethnic minority groups only make up 2% of top tech firms’ boards and senior executive teams. Additionally, data gaps make it very difficult to know the full extent of the problem of ethnic minority representation in STEMM.
Although we have seen significant improvement in women’s representation in STEMM, we would like this progression to continue and also for this progression to include ALL women.

The theme of the International Women’s Day 2021 Conference is #ChooseToChallenge and WISE@QMUL is choosing to challenge the unequal representation of women and ethnic minority women in STEMM. Our conference aims to bring people together to address this unequal representation and discuss practical solutions to combat it.

Our expert speakers will share their brilliant work and career experiences with the next generation of women in STEMM at QMUL and beyond. The conference will be a prime opportunity to provide the audience with examples of STEMM careers and views on the future of women in STEMM and the experiences of ethnic minority women in STEMM. With QMUL ranking first place for equality and diversity this year, we hope to build on the work already done by staff and students here and contribute towards being “the most inclusive university of its kind, anywhere”.
