Seminar: Operational Research: Scheduling of Manufacturing Systems with Petri Nets

5 February 2020

Time: 12:00 - 1:00pm
Speaker: Dr Hyunjung Kim, Assistant Professor at Industrial & System Engineering, KAIST
Venue: Bancroft Road Teaching Rooms, RM:3.22

Abstract:

There have been many approaches and algorithms for scheduling of manufacturing systems. Most of these methods have focused on the effectiveness or efficiency in solving their own problems. Hence, less attention has been paid to the issue of compatibility with other scheduling problems, and the solution methods are ad hoc and hard to be used for other scheduling problems even with small changes. A Petri net, which is a graphical and mathematical modelling tool, can well represent various scheduling problems with different constraints and objectives. Hence, this talk introduces solution approaches such as a branch and bound algorithm and a reinforcement learning method based on a Petri net especially for scheduling problems of automated manufacturing systems.
