Seminar: Systematic Modelling and Control of Multi-Vector Energy Systems in Microgrids
26 February 2018
Time: 1:00 - 1:30pm
Venue: QMUL campus: Engineering building, Room 3.24
Hosted by the
Antennas and Electromagnetics research group
Speaker:
Dr Damian Giaouris
Abstract:
Hybrid renewable power generation systems considering storage of energy and/or hydrogen involve considerable complexity as heterogeneous equipment need to be interconnected and activated or deactivated at different time instances. This work employs generic and flexible decision making models to develop complex power/hydrogen management strategies and investigate their performance on systems integrating multiple power generation and storage devices. These models significantly facilitate the analysis of both a standalone power generation and storage system forming a microgrid currently in operation as well as three interconnected microgrids of different functionalities considered in this work. These systems are used to investigate the performance of a large number of power management strategies developed using the proposed models.
Biography:
Dr Damian Giaouris is the Deputy Head of the Electrical Power Research Group at Newcastle University, UK and a Senior Lecturer in Control and Electrical Systems. He received the B.Sc. from Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2000, and the MSc and the PhD degree from Newcastle University, U.K., in 2001 and 2004 respectively, all in Control and Electrical Engineering. Dr Giaouris has 128 peer-reviewed conference and journal publications in the area of control, power electronics and power systems with the google scholar h-index of 18. He was the co-investigator in substantial EPSRC grants on High-Efficiency Electrical Energy Conversion and Power Drives (£948,601), and one of the lead investigators in one of the biggest European Horizon 2020 Consortium, InteGRIDy (15M €, 2017-2020), on the integration cutting-edge technologies, solutions and mechanisms in Smart Grid with the participation of 30 universities and companies. His other positions include Guest Member of Staff at Technical University of Munich, Germany, Research Fellow at Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), Greece and Consultant at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He is also the Associate Editor of the IET journal in Power Electronics.
