A special Institute of Applied Data Science colloquium lecture will be given by Professor Shmuel Weinberger (University of Chicago). The event is open to everyone; coffee/tea will be provided following the talk.
Venue: QMUL Mile End campus, Queens' Building, Room W316Date: Tuesday 9th AprilTime: 10:00amTitle: Three faces of applied topology
Abstract: Topology is a mathematical tool that enables the study of irregular and occasionally imprecisely described objects: it’s the “rubber sheet geometry”. By providing a methodology that abstracts away the need for the knowledge of the values of functions, it has a different feel than, say, analysis. In recent years, it has become a valuable addition to the scientist’s toolbox. In this talk, I will try to introduce some basic ideas of this field and describe three rather different ways topology gets applied. I will draw examples from the work of many scientists from areas such as economics, engineering, medicine, and cosmology.
