The CMMR symposium hosted by C4DM will feature in a BBC1 documentary on music and emotions, later this year. The BBC filmed the keynote “Hearing with our hearts: psychological perspectives on music and emotions” and musicologists attending the symposium, as part of the BBC’s “Imagine” series.
CMMR (Computer Music Modelling and Retrieval: Music and Emotions) brought together practitioners from a range of areas including academics, industry, composers, software developers, librarians. Keynotes focussed on music psychology, music signal processing and film music composition. One panel session discussed production music: mood and metadata; the second explored the future of music information research.
The oldest surviving music hall in the world, Wilton’s Music Hall, provided the atmospheric setting for the CMMR New Resonances Music Festival. Concert highlights included the live visualisation of tonal space: “Libby with MuSA_RT” with Prof. Elaine Chew from EECS (piano and mathematical model); d’Amore for viola and magnetic resonator piano by Andrew McPherson from EECS. Mood Conductor, a smartphone app developed by EECS and SoundCloud, allowed audience members to send emotion-related directions for performers. The musicians and performers of “VoXP: Interactive Vocal Improvisation + Mood Conductor” used this audience guidance when improvising music.
