Profile

Dr Riasat Islam is a Lecturer in Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London, specialising in Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction and Software Engineering. With a PhD in Computing from The Open University, his research focuses on wearable technologies for rehabilitation, contributing to advancements in clinical practice. 
 
Dr Islam has a strong background in both teaching and research, having developed engaging curricula and worked on projects that leverage technology to enhance learning and healthcare. His work includes collaborations with startups to translate research into practical applications. 
 
As a co-founder of Greentech Apps Foundation (gtaf.org), Dr Islam has successfully led a team to create apps used by millions worldwide. His experience spans academic teaching, research, and practical innovation, driven by a commitment to applying technology to solve real-world challenges

Research

Research Interests:

Dr Riasat Islam's research interests focus on the intersection of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). He is particularly passionate about developing user-centred AI systems with applications in healthcare and well-being, aiming to create solutions that enhance the user experience while supporting physical and mental health. Additionally, Dr Islam is interested in exploring the use of user-centred AI in Islamic computing, with a focus on creating interconnected learning platforms that foster spiritual growth and well-being.

Public Engagement

Dr Islam plays a key role at Greentech Apps Foundation (GTAF), a UK-based non-profit focused on creating innovative and authentic Islamic educational apps. He leads the Research and Development team, setting the vision and goals for educational technology projects. Dr Islam has helped raise over £500,000 through crowdfunding and supports the organization’s management and participating in leadership decisions, ensuring the smooth operation of GTAF’s projects that serve over 2 million active users. 
 
Dr Islam has generated income through consultancy and intellectual property. His work in developing wearable systems for medical applications and machine learning models for clinical movement analysis has led to collaborations with startups like Ai Rehab Ltd, providing crucial technological solutions and contributing to knowledge transfer and commercialisation of research.
