Whereas China's rejection of the Arbitral Awards in the South China Sea case, initiated by the Philippines, is often considered a rejection of international law (of the sea) as such, this presentation will demonstrate that China is nonetheless relying very much on international law, albeit through other means than judicial processes, to legitimise and consolidate its position in the South China Sea.
