'The 'Blood and Fire' nomad who walked into Whitechapel'Professor Olwyn WestwoodIt is unrealistic to expect everyone entering higher education to know where they will end up. I am no exception to that rule and will reveal how providence and chutzpah have provided opportunities for the exciting journey into medical education via laboratories, dark-rooms and lecture theatres, to arrive in London E1.Professor Olwyn Westwood was born in Lancaster, graduated from the University of Surrey then took her Ph.D in the Dept of Obstetrics at UMDS at Guy's Hospital, London. Her academic career has included Surrey, St George's, and California. At Swansea she designed and set up the graduate entry programme in medicine - its curriculum and associated laboratories. With her readership at Surrey, she became interested in the internationalisation of curricula. She came to Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2008 where her responsibilities as Associate Dean for Education Quality fit well with her role as a GMC visitor.'Planning Serendipity - Career options in Medicine'Professor Mike RobertsThe literature from the Modernising Medical Careers authority advocates a structured four tiered support programme based on sound educational theory that develops rationale career decision making in medicine. In his lecture, Professor Roberts relates a lifetime experience of total lack of career support which provided some interesting experiences and a happy ending... so far!Professor Mike Roberts was born in Manchester, graduated from Liverpool Medical School and trained as a respiratory physician at The Royal Brompton, Charing Cross, University College and the London Chest Hospitals London and St Vincent's and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals Sydney.
