Time: 7:30pmVenue: The Octagon, Queens' Building, Queen Mary, University of London, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS
THE COLLEGE MUSIC SOCIETY’S CHRISTMAS CONCERT will be held in the Octagon of the Queen’s Building, Mile End Campus, on Friday 4th December 2009 at 7.30 pm. It is open to everyone and is free. A Reception, by limited invitation only, will also be held in the Senior Common Room at 6.30 pm. Admission to both is strictly by ticket, available from the Events Office.
After celebrating the music of the Anniversary composers Haydn, Handel and Mendelssohn in our concerts earlier this year, the fourth great Anniversary composer, Henry Purcell (1659 95), now takes centre stage; regarded as perhaps the greatest English composer of all time, his tuneful works will delight all.
The performed music will be set in the historical context of political life in 17th century London and will also explore his influence on other composers, especially Benjamin Britten in the 20th century. The rich ambient acoustics of the majestic Octagon will be a perfect setting, as well as providing a warm meeting place to share this culture.
To comply with tradition, this concert ends with Christmas carols for audience and performers, with particular reference to the evening’s theme.
