'Tending tender tendons'
Tendon problems are prevalent, and affect both top athletes and sedentary subjects. A constant source of frustration and a Cinderella of musculoskeletal medicine, only as of late these ailments have come to the forefront and are being studied in a systematic fashion. The lecture will dwell upon the personal experience of a medical student, and delineate a journey of continuing study, outlining the present state of affairs and the research carried out at the Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary, University of London. Professor Nicola Maffulli graduated from the University of Napoli Medical School, Italy, in 1983. In pursuit of becoming a molecular biologist, he discoveredOrthopaedics, and embarked in a surgical career. After a period at the Karolinska Institute, Nicola moved to the UK in 1985 and became a classical example of an old fashioned British surgical trainee. After six towns and three countries, in 2001 he moved to Keele University as the Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. In December 2008, Nicola returned to London as the Centre Lead and Professor of Sports and Exercise Medicine: a bit like coming back home.
