'Social Surveys, community studies and east London'
Professor Seale will locate his own research work within a tradition of social research that goes back to Booth’s surveys of poverty and wealth in 19th century London. Much of his research work has focused on the quality of terminal care. In recent years this work has touched on ethically controversial issues, and describes the mass media reporting of this work, raising more general issues of how the mass media report social statistics. Finally, Professor Seale will describe current work enabled by a Perrin/ Wellcome bequest, concerning communication in diabetes consultations in Tower Hamlets.
Professor Seale has lived and worked in London since 1979, having come here from Exeter and Portsmouth where he trained as a teacher. Initially working in educational and health research in a variety of institutions, Professor Seale then lectured in the University of East London, Goldsmiths and Brunel University before taking up his current post. Professor Seale's work concerns end-of-life care, mass media and health, communication in medical settings, and social research methods.
