This lecture will look at materials based on apatite, the calcium phosphate mineral phase of tooth and bone. The term apatite comes from the Greek “Apate” who was the spirit of deceit, guile, fraud and deception who was released from the original Pandora’s Box. Professor Hill will describe some of the materials he has developed that are based on Apatites, or form Apatites that can be, used for a wide variety of applications in medicine and dentistry. These include bone substitutes, bone adhesives, dental fillings dental crowns and toothpastes. He will outline applications of apatites for lasers phosphors and nuclear waste entrapment. Finally he will show how the structure of biologically derived apatites still confuses and misleads us despite the importance of apatites in major diseases such as osteoporosis and tooth decay. Robert Hill is Head of the Unit of Dental Physical Sciences, which was formed from DentalBiomaterials and Biophysics. He has a double Honours degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry. He undertook his Ph.D in Polymer Physics under the supervision of Dame Julia Higgins at Imperial College. Over the last 15 years his research has focused on degradable glasses that dissolve in the body forming apatite like minerals. He was formerly Professor of Biomaterials at Imperial College and cofounder of Repregen Ltd, a campus spin out company based on a key patent he filed on strontium releasing bioactive glasses.
