It is well known that older mothers have a higher risk of having a baby with Down syndrome. But does the father’s age matter as well ? And are the risks for other birth defects also higher? This talk will examine the risks to babies of older mothers and fathers.
Joan Morris graduated in Mathematics at Cambridge University and then obtained an MSc in Statistics at Oxford University. She worked as a statistician in the Department of Health and Social Security, the Institute of Neurology and the Royal Free Hospital, where she completed a PhD. In 1993 she moved to the Wolfson Institute, where she continued with her research into the prevention of cardiovascular disease and became interested in the epidemiology of congenital anomalies. In 2003 she became Director of the National Down Syndrome Cytogenetic Register.
