On the bicentenary of Dickens's birth, this lecture looks back to the birth of his style.
Garrett Stewart is the James O. Freedman Professor of Letters at the University of Iowa. He is the author of ten books, including Bookwork: Medium to Object to Concept to Art (2011), Framed Time: Toward a Postfilmic Cinema (2007),nd Screen: Modernism's Photo Synthesis (2000), The Look of Reading: Book, Painting, Text (2006), and Dear Reader: The Conscripted Audience in Nineteenth-Century British Fiction (1996). His book Novel Violence: A Narratography of Victorian Fiction (2009) was awarded the International Society for the Study of Narrative's Perkins Prize.
