Rubén Szuchmacher in conversation with Catherine Silverstone

Catherine Silverstone discusses Shakespeare adaptations with Argentinian director Rubén Szuchmacher. Projects under discussion will be A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1988), King Lear (2009) and Henry IV Part 2 (2012), which is invited to be part of the international Globe to Globe season at Shakespeare’s Globe in May 2012.

Rubén Szuchmacher is one of Argentina’s leading theatre artists. He has worked as actor, director, teacher, playwright, dancer, puppeteer, set designer, assistant director and musician. Among other works, he has directed Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1988), Albert Camus’ Caligula (1994), Steven Berkoff's Decadence (1996), Bertolt Brecht’s Galileo Galilei (1999), Luigi Pirandello’s Enrico IV (2005), Arthur Miller’s Death of Salesman (2007), Heiner Muller’s Quartett (2006) and King Lear (2009). His works have been presented at major theaters in Argentina and abroad, and his Henry IV Part 2 was included in the Globe to Globe Festival. For the operatic stage he directed Benjamin Britten’s Turn of the Screw (1999), Espejismos (La muerte y la doncella) (1987) and Liederkreis (2000) by contemporary Argentinian composer Gerardo Gandini, Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos (2004) and many others. He was awarded the ACE de Oro by Argentina’s theatre critics, the Associatión de Cronistas del Espectáculo; the Trinidad Guevara Award, Buenos Aires’ most prestigious prize; and the GETEA Best Director Award by the Argentine Association for Theatre Studies.

Catherine Silverstone is Senior Lecturer in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies at Queen Mary University of London. Her research is focused on contemporary performance, especially in relation to adaptations and appropriations of Shakespeare's plays, trauma, sexuality, ethnicity and theatrical reconstruction. She is the author of Shakespeare, Trauma and Contemporary Performance (Routledge, 2011) and co-editor of Tragedy in Transition (Blackwell, 2007).
