Dan Rebellato discusses stage adaptations with director Katie Mitchell, whose distinctive theatrical language combines elements of cinema and live performance in radical reinterpretations of the classics. Her recent productions include a version of Virginia Woolf’s The Waves (2006), a retelling of Dostoyevsky’s The Idiot (…Some Trace of Her, 2008) and a rewriting of Strindberg’s Miss Julie (2009) seen from the point of view of Julie’s servant, Kristin.
Katie Mitchell is an Associate Director at the National Theatre, and was awarded an OBE in 2009 for services to drama. Mitchell founded her company, Classics on a Shoestring, on the London Fringe in the late 1980s, and directed Gorki’s Vassa Zheleznova, Arden of Faversham and Euripides’ Women of Troy (Gate Theatre, both won Time Out Awards); Live Like Pigs (Royal Court Theatre Upstairs), and The House of Bernarda Alba (Gate Theatre). Recent theatre productions include: The Trial of Ubu (Hampstead Theatre); The Maids, The Jewish Wife (Young Vic); A Woman Killed With Kindness, The Dybbuk, Ghosts, Henry VI, The Phoenician Women (Evening Standard Best Director Award), Beckett Shorts (with the Royal Shakespeare Company); The Last Ones, lphigenia at Aulis (Abbey Theatre, Dublin); Orest (Netherlands Opera); Beauty and the Beast, The Cat in the Hat, Pains of Youth, Some Trace of Her, Rutherford and Son, The Machine Wreckers, The Oresteia, Ivanov, Three Sisters, Dream Play, Iphigenia at Aulis, The Seagull, Waves, Attempts on her Life and Women of Troy (National Theatre).
Dan Rebellato is Professor of Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he is also Head of Department. His research focuses on post-war British theatre, playwriting and politics. He is the author of 1956 and All That (Routledge, 1999), Theatre & Globalisation (Palgrave, 2009) and co-editor with Maria Delgado of Contemporary European Theatre Directors (Routledge, 2010). He is co-editor with Jen Harvie of the Theatre & series for Palgrave Macmillan, and Associate Editor of Contemporary Theatre Review. Prof. Rebellato is also a playwright; his plays have been performed in Britain, Europe and America, on stage and on radio.
