Appointed a life peer in 1992, Baroness Jay has had an extraordinarily varied and prolific career which has by no means subsided since her retirement from active politics in 2001. Following a successful period in current affairs and TV production at the BBC, Baroness Jay served as Labour’s health spokesperson and Deputy Leader in the Lords prior to 1997. Upon Labour’s election, she was appointed Minister for Women (sharing the portfolio with Tessa Jowell) and was later made Leader of the Lords, playing a central role in the historic removal of most hereditary members. Aside from her political career, Baroness Jay has been a pioneer of health issues, serving as founder director of the National Aids Trust in the 1980s, and has most recently been a vocal proponent for legislation on the issue of assisted dying.
Chair of the House of Lords Constitution Committee since 2010, which scrutinises constitutional issues, Baroness Jay will talk on the topic of the Committee's recently published report 'Constitutional Implications of Coalition Government’ (found here: http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld201314/ldselect/ldconst/130/130.pdf ).Baroness Jay is ideally placed to provide insight into the compatibility and potential challenge posed to the British constitution by Coalition Government. The event will be of particular relevance to students, academics, civil servants and business leaders with an interest in government machinery.A drinks reception will follow the lecture. For tickets please email meg@qmul.ac.uk'
