Galvanism – the contraction of muscle stimulated by an electric current – was named after 18th Century scientist Luigi Galvani who investigated the effect of electricity on dissected animals. These experiments led to much research into whether cadavers could be ‘re-animated’ using electricity, and inspired Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein.
