Title: Precision and equipoise for a surgeon-scientist.Description: Hemant Kocher will discuss the conflicting approaches in the career of a surgeon-scientist. As a surgeon, he needs to be precise, quick, and deliberate in actions, thus ensuring confidence and trust amongst patients and clinical staff. Being a scientist entails retaining doubt, question validity of all data and maintaining equipoise. He will illustrate this with examples from his surgical practice and scientific research programme which are aimed to diagnose cancers earlier and make treatment more efficacious.Biography: Hemant Kocher from Jodhpur (Rajasthan, India) graduated from Seth G.S. Medical College, Mumbai (Bombay). He obtained his surgical training at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, Mumbai before coming to London to pursue a career as surgeon-scientist. After completing his scientific training (Profs Hendry and Benjamin) and HPB surgical training (Profs Benjamin, Heaton, Rela and Patel) he was awarded the prestigious NIHR Clinician Scientist Fellowship to establish his group at Barts Cancer Institute under mentorship of Prof Ian Hart. His research interests include pancreatic tumour stromal biology, clinical trials, bio-banking, surgical techniques, epidemiology, risk stratification related to liver and pancreatic diseases.
