Summary
Clinical medicine and preventive medicine are complimentary disciplines. Both rest on a knowledge and understanding of epidemiology. Professor David Wald will, in his inaugural lecture, give examples of how these disciplines come together in the field of cardiovascular disease.
Biography
David Wald was appointed Professor of Cardiology at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London in July 2014. He is an interventional cardiologist at the Barts Heart Centre and a preventive cardiologist at the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine. He studied at Oxford (1990, Lincoln College) and London (1993, St Mary’s Hospital) and held clinical posts in acute medicine at the John Radcliffe Hospital, in radiology at the New York University Hospital, in anaesthetics at The Royal United Hospital Bath and in cardiology in the Wessex Region (from 2000). His MD thesis (2004) was on serum homocysteine, folic acid and cardiovascular disease. With colleagues, he conducted the Preventive Angioplasty in Myocardial Infarction (PRAMI) Trial, the Polypill Prevention Trial and is conducting the Child Parent Screening Study for familial hypercholesterolaemia.
