Come to your senses

16 May 2018

Time: 7:00 - 10:00pm
Venue: The Water Poet 9-11 Folgate St, Spitalfields, London E1 6BX

What happens when the digital world meets the real world? Nowdays people are being replaced by machines, but what can technology learn about human senses? Come and listen to Dr Isabelle Mareschal speak about what your eye movements might reveal about you and Dr Rebecca Stewart describe a new generation of smart clothes that can interact with your senses!

Eye contact: what your eye movements reveal about you

Dr Isabelle Mareschal (Senior Lecturer in Psychology)
Using an eye tracker to record people’s eye movements while they look around the world is of great interest for both diagnostic and research purposes. We recorded people’s eye movements in 2 different scenarios: while they engaged in making eye contact with an actor on a screen (akin to a Skype scenario) and while they engaged in “forced” periods of eye contact with another person in real life. We examined whether how participants looked another person reveals important information about themselves, and whether looking at another person on a screen is similar to looking at them in real life.

Smart and Not-So-Smart Textiles

Dr. Rebecca Stewart (Lecturer in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London)
If your clothes could talk what would they say? We all have smart phones and we also could eventually all have smart clothes. So what are smart textiles and how might they change the way you interact with computers in the future? From jumpers that track your breathing to trousers that know when you’re talking, we will delve into the world of electronic textiles and what they can (and can’t) do.
