Performing Utopia:Discourses of Love, Compassion and more in International Relations

25 May 2018

Time: 9:30am - 5:00pm
Venue: QMUL, Mile End Campus, Arts Two, Room 2.17

Sponsored by the British International Studies ISA, this workshop aims at gathering scholars and postgraduate students around the question of discourse performativity in its empirical, methodological, and theoretical dimensions. Particularly, it asks: If discourses participate in structuring the world they refer to, how can IR discourses focusing only on domination and exploitation contribute to social change and the improvement of the social conditions they study? The aim of this workshop is to bring together scholars whose work address this contradiction. The concept of “utopia” has been chosen as an umbrella to encompass all the objects, theories and methodologies that are capable of performing a world different than the one historically studied in the discipline.
