Universities produce more PhDs than the higher education sector has the capacity to cope with. Only three or four in every hundred PhD students in the United Kingdom will land a permanent staff position at a university. Writing grant applications, an uncertain future, insecurity, lack of institutional resources, etc face the vast majority of PhD graduates in STEM. These coupled with the lack of knowledge about changing trends and support from the university regarding transitioning into non-academic careers add to the frustration. Moreover, some graduates may not desire to do a post-doc or carve out an academic career once they complete their PhDs; it may not be for them. Although finding an alternative career in the current climate may be difficult, most PhD students need to make plans for a life outside academic science.
This panel discussion with 4 women who have a successful career outside of academia, will explore the topic of alternatives to the leaky pipeline after completing a PhD/post-doc. The discussion will be followed by lunch and refreshments during which time the audience members will have the opportunity to network and ask further questions to the panel members in a more informal setting. This event is free to anyone wishing to attend but registration is essential for catering purposes.
