How to Conduct Safer Field Research in Hostile Environments

When: Thursday, February 25, 2021, 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM
Where: Online

The International State Crime Initiative (ISCI) is delighted to welcome Professor Isabell Schierenbeck (Gothenburg University) for the talk: How to Conduct Safer Field Research in Hostile Environments. The online event will be chaired by Alicia de la Cour Venning (Queen Mary School of Law).

The newly published book Safer Field Research in the Social Sciences. A Guide to Human and Digital Security in Hostile Environments (SAGE, 2020) aims to fill a gap: the lack of practical guidelines helping researchers to reduce their and their research partners’ vulnerability in the field. In this online talk, Professor Schierenbeck will explore the challenges and risks of social science field work in a rapidly securitized landscape and share best practices for conducting safer research before, after and during field work. The presentation will draw on the authors’ experiences in regions of conflict and is grounded in real-world examples.
