Yes, Insurers regards work experience students as employees therefore covered under the Employers Liability policy.

Yes, sometimes organisations who like to check that the host establishment carries adequate insurance and ask for details of this.  Please download the liability letter.

The University Liability insurance policy automatically covers staff for temporary work overseas such as research purposes. 

Once you return to the UK, email the Insurance Manager who will forward you the claim form.  This needs to be completed and returned with supporting documents within 6 months of incident.  

There is no excess

Personal holidays is not covered.  This includes any holidays before or after your business trip.  You will need to arrange your own insurance for your personal holiday.

The university has legal responsibility and duty of care to its staff to manage Health and Safety.  It is both a legal and insurance requirement that all drivers have a full and valid license.

No, it is important to remember that you are only insured to drive on approved business and not insured for personal use.

The university will not insure your vehicle whilst on university business.   

All property owned by the University, or for which it is legally responsible is covered for its replacement value against loss or damage.

Cover is limited to £250,000, any one item subject to £50,000, for any one loss away from the premises including in transit, either in the UK or overseas.

Equipment on loan is automatically covered up to a limit of £150,000.

No - The University cannot provide insurance for personal belongings that are on campus or used for work purposes. We have to assume that the University provides you with all the equipment that you require in order to carry out your work. Therefore personal belongings used for University work is done so at the owner's risk and if insurance is necessary should be arranged through the individual’s household policy. The only time when personal effects are covered is when the individual is travelling overseas on University business.

If the Foreign and Commonwealth travel advice is that it is safe to travel but the hosts cancels the trip, this is beyond the control of the traveller or the university. Insurers will therefore provide cover in this situation.

In the first instance check with the airline or travel management company (Key Travel) for any refunds.

If that fails, we can claim through Insurers.

If the event is still going ahead and the traveller decides not to travel, a travel insurance claim will not be accepted as this will be considered 'disinclination to travel'.

All travel insurance claims should be notified directly to AIG and completed claim forms sent to claimsuk@aig.com with supporting documents where claims will be reviewed and considered under its own merit.

Along with a completed Travel Insurance Claim Form you will need to supply the following:

  • Evidence of flight invoice
  • Hotel invoice
  • Travel insurance cover note.
  • Copies of receipts/invoices

Due to the high number of claims, this process can take up to four to six weeks.

Yes, if the purpose of your visit is cancelled by the host you can come home and claim the cost of rearranging your flights.

Unfortunately we are unable to claim for flights or hotels through the Insurers as this is considered as 'disinclination to travel'.

Please check with the travel management company if any costs can be reimbursed.
