Violence Reduction

While national crimes rates overall are dropping, violent crimes against young people have been increasing steadily over the last ten years. Stabbing and gunshot injuries are now the most frequent reason for the London Air Ambulance to be called out, and account for nearly 800 trauma team activations at the Royal London Hospital each year. There is a national recognition that a public health, preventative approach to violence is key in reducing the impact of violence on our communities. Healthcare provides a positive, healing environment in which professionals can recognise those in crisis, offer tailored support to try and safeguard patients from harm, and evaluate whether these interventions have an effect.

The Centre for Trauma Sciences is exploring the root causes of violence; the ways in which early years development, adversity in childhood, and stress throughout the adolescent period can lead to violence in our communities. Studies are also underway to evaluate the effectiveness of current violence reduction innovations in healthcare and exploring ways we can improve our identification and support of vulnerable groups at risk of harm, including through psychological support in the clinical setting, and long-term case management after discharge from hospital.
