We are very happy to share the news that the School of Geography has successfully renewed our Bronze Athena Swan award.

The Athena Swan Charter is a framework which is used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education (HE) and research. Established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment, the Charter is now being used across the globe to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

This award is a well-deserved recognition of our achievements in this area and the result of a significant amount of work over the past year from a wide range of staff in the School.

The Athena Swan Action Plan will be made available shortly for all to see what our overall aims are over the next few years (the plan runs until 2028). The School's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, now co-chaired by Dr Elsa Noterman and Shazia Sadiq, will lead on implementing this action plan across the School. We hope that successful implement on the action plan will allow the School to apply for a Silver award within five years.
