The School of Geography is committed to generating socially-engaged research that is valued by a wide range of stakeholders, policy makers and publics – from the local (in east London) to the global.
Our research is often undertaken in close collaboration with users with whom we establish meaningful, mutually beneficial and sustained research partnerships.
Collaborative research with museums
We have a long history of working with partners and collaborators in the museum sector, including the British Museum, The V&A Museum of Childhood, the Ragged School Museum and the Museum of the Home.
Led by Professor Alison Blunt, the Stay Home Stories project combines geographical research with arts-based practice to explore how the pandemic has changed our relationship to home. The video below explores how Muslim refugee women used textiles to represent their experiences of the pandemic; textiles that were then stitched together and displayed as a patchwork in the Museum of the Home.
Reaching a broader audience
Researchers in the School of Geography operate across a range of popular media in order to broaden the audience for our research. Recent highlights include Professor Kate Spencer discussing her research on the environmental impacts of coastal erosion on historical landfill sites on BBC Panorama and Channel 4 News.
