European Fellowships

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) School of Geography welcomes Expressions of Interest from postdoctoral researchers with an excellent track record to apply jointly with a QMUL host supervisor to the  MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships – call 2023.

What does the Fellowship entail?

European Fellowships comprise a personalised research project between Host Supervisor/Research group with academic and professional training and two way sharing of know how. It must show a ‘best fit’ between fellow and PI supervisor and host.

It offers a 12-24 months highly competitive researcher salary and research/training funds.

Eligibility

  • Any age and nationality and not carried out your main activity (work/studies) in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 36 months prior to the EC MSCA PF call deadline of 13/09/2023

  • Hold a PhD at the date of the EC call deadline

  • Have a maximum of eight years full-time research experience, from the date of PhD. Years outside research and documented leave periods will not be taken into account.

How to Apply

Your EOI must be submitted to the Research Manager geog-research@qmul.ac.uk by Wednesday June 21st 2023.

Your EOI must include:

1) CV, including a full list of publications (max. two pages)

2) Two page outline of your research proposal (to review quality of your idea) and how you will contribute to the research profile of the school

3) A statement confirming that you meet the fellow eligibility criteria

Selected candidates will then be invited to prepare their full proposal with their future supervisor. Additional proposal preparation guidance materials, bid reviews and technical submission support is provided by the QM JRMO EU preward

QMUL has a history of success with nearly 70 Horizon 2020 individual fellowships, was ranked 9th in the UK and 18th in Europe for H2020 fellowships, and had 15 successfully evaluated Horizon Europe fellowships.

EC Funding Deadline

The EC MSCA-PF (2023) deadline date is 13th September 2023.

The UK remains eligible to apply to and be evaluated as if an Associated Country to all Horizon Europe calls including MSCA-PF (2023). See also the EU Q&As as formalisation of UK association to Horizon Europe continues.

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships

Applications for the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (ECF) 2023/2024 round have now open.

These fellowships are for outstanding early career researchers from all disciplines and provide funding for a three-year academic position to undertake a substantial piece of publishable work. It is annual competition with a deadline in late February or early March each year.

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships

This scheme provides funding for excellent post-doctoral researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Funding covers a 36-month independent research post aimed at the completion of a significant piece or pieces of publishable work. Full details are on the BA website here. This is an annual two-stage competition, with a deadline normally in mid-October.

ESRC London Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership Postdoctoral Fellowships

These are 12-month fellowships aimed at those in the immediately postdoctoral stage of their career, to provide the opportunity to consolidate their PhD through developing publications, networks, and their research and professional skills. Funding covers the fellow’s salary for one year, plus research expenses up to £10,000. This annual completion normally has a deadline in late March. NERC Independent Research Fellowship

The NERC Independent Research Fellowship (IRF) scheme is designed to develop scientific leadership among the most promising early-career environmental scientists, by giving all fellows five years' support, which will allow them sufficient time to develop their research programmes and to gain international recognition. This is an annual competition with a deadline usually in early October and full details can be found here.

The school is also interested in anybody considering applying for the following fellowship schemes: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships; UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships; Newton International Fellowships; British Academy/Royal Society Newton Advanced Fellowships.
