Research topic Developing an operational tool for assessing the physical habitat condition of tropical rivers in Thailand. Project detail My research is about characterising and classifying the diverse tropical rivers in Thailand and developing the citizen-science tool to monitor the geomorphological habitat change in Thailand using the framework from the UK’s Modular River Survey (MoRPh). It consists of three phases: Phase 1: Developing a river typology for Thailand and identifying exemplar study catchments. This phase utilise the remotely-sensed data from satellite images and national environmental database to develop Thailand’s first river typology that can describe and distinguish the different diverse river nature in Thailand. Phase 2: Developing the tropical MoRPh survey Using the framework from the UK’s MoRPh survey, the tropical MoRPh survey suitable for the diversity of the river environments in Thailand is developed and adapted to account for the difference in climatic and hydrological conditions between Thailand and the UK. Phase 3: Uptake and use of the MoRPh survey tool in Thailand This phase focuses on improving the usability of the tropical MoRPh survey developed. The survey will be tested by local conservation groups, citizen science, and local officers, and feedback on user experience and suitability will be used to develop the final illustrated manual in Thai for local use. I also have a background on tropical biogeography of shorebirds and crocodiles in Thailand.
