Criminal Justice, Fundamental Rights, and the Rule of law in the Digital Age

Technology has played a crucial role in ensuring the continued functioning of criminal justice at the EU and national level during the Covid-19 emergency. At the same time, the use of technologies in the administration and delivery of criminal justice can profoundly affect essential fundamental rights and rule of law safeguards.

The High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) on Criminal Justice in the Digital Age - set up by the Queen Mary Global Policy Institute and the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) - has examined how different technologies can impact the functioning of courts and justice systems, as well as EU judicial cooperation in criminal matters.

The HLEG’s discussions showcased the expert knowledge needed to set out recommendations towards better EU policy and law making in this sensitive and fast evolving domain.

This report launch event provided the opportunity to present key findings of the HLEG Report in presence of EU policy makers following files related to the digitalisation of criminal justice and the use of data for the purpose of investigating and prosecuting crime. The Report’s findings formed the basis for a policy discussion between Members of the European Parliament, EU agencies, civil society actors, and legal experts working on issues related to the use of technologies in the criminal justice field.

The event opened with a welcome from Professor Colin Grant, Vice Principal (International) at Queen Mary University of London, with closing remarks from Valsamis Mitsilegas, Professor of European Criminal Law and Global Security and Deputy Dean for Global Engagement (Europe).
