Drawing on a range of expertise brought by members from government, higher education, and the health and social care sectors, the Queen Mary Global Policy Institute Advisory Board meets three times a year and is responsible for supporting the strategic mission and direction of the Institute.
Paola Subacchi is a Professor of International Economics, Chair of the Queen Mary Global Policy Institute's Advisory Board and a visiting professor at the University of Bologna; she also holds a number of non-executive directorships. She writes regularly on Project Syndicate.
Paola's research focuses on the functioning and governance of the international financial and monetary system. Her latest book, The Cost of Free Money. How Unfettered Capital Threatens our Economic Future, was published in July 2020 by Yale University Press.
An Italian national, she studied at Università Bocconi in Milan and at the University of Oxford. In 2016 she was awarded the honour Cavaliere della Stella d’Italia.

Visweswaran Navaratnam is a pharmacologist and an educator. He received several research grants from the World Health Organization between 1979 and 2009 and was a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1990-1991. His academic career ranges from being a tutor in professor clinical pharmacology at the University Bath followed by an appointment as a lecturer and then associate Professor at the School Pharmacy, University Sains Malaysia, Minden. He was the Foundation Director for the National Center Drug Research, University Sains Malaysia. Professor Navaratnam is Advisor to the Ministry Higher Education, Putrajaya, Malaysia, since 2007 as well as representative for the Asia Drugs Neglected Diseases Initiative, Geneva, since 2005. He is also the Director of UMSLink, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, since 2008.
Martin Uden is a former British diplomat. He served as Ambassador in Seoul from 2008-2011, having had two previous postings in the Embassy there. He was previously Consul-General in San Francisco, and had postings to Bonn, Ottawa and Lagos. While on leave from the Foreign Office, he worked for the UN in New York as Coordinator of the Panel of Experts on sanctions against the DPRK from 2012-14. After leaving the Foreign Office, he worked for HSBC in Hong Kong from 2015-17. He now works for his alma mater, Queen Mary University of London, as International Partnerships Adviser. In addition, he is the Executive Chairman of the British Korean Society, a trustee of the United Society Partners in the Gospel and a Governor of his local school. He is the author of Times Past in Korea (2003), an anthology of foreign writings on Korea, based on his collection of antiquarian books, and of a historical introduction to Korea: Caught in Time (1997).

Jan Wouters is Full Professor of International Law and International Organizations, Jean Monnet Chair ad personam EU and Global Governance, and founding Director of the Institute for International Law and of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies, an interdisciplinary research centre with the status of both a Jean Monnet and KU Leuven Centre of Excellence, at KU Leuven. He is also President of KU Leuven’s Council for International Policy. He studied law and philosophy at Antwerp University, obtained an LL.M. at Yale University and was Visiting Researcher at Harvard University. As Visiting Professor at Sciences Po (Paris), Luiss University (Rome) and the College of Europe (Bruges) he teaches EU external relations law. As Adjunct Professor at Columbia University he teaches comparative EU-US perspectives on international human rights law. He is a Member of the Royal Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts and practises law as Of Counsel at Linklaters, Brussels. Jan Wouters is Editor of the International Encyclopedia of Intergovernmental Organizations, Deputy Director of the Revue Belge de Droit International, and an editorial board member in ten other international journals. He has published widely on international and EU law, international organizations, global governance and financial law. Apart from his participation in international scientific networks, he advises various international organizations and governments, trains international officials and is often asked to comment international events in the media.
Poppy Jaman OBE is an internationally respected mental health advocate, national policy advisor and social entrepreneur. A global voice of authority on workplace mental health, she is the CEO of the City Mental Health Alliance. Poppy is also the Founder of Re=Balance and a Trustee for The Centre of Mental Health.Poppy was instrumental in the creation of the NHS’s Every Mind Matters platform and has been recognised by the Secretary of State in Parliament as one of England’s mental health experts. In 2018, Poppy was awarded an OBE in recognition of her services to people with mental health issues and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Gloucestershire. Chairman of the Kings Group, a conglomerate of five companies and one of the leading textile and garment manufacturing and exporting groups in Pakistan, he is Vice President of the English Speaking Union (ESU) International, Patron-in-Chief of the English Speaking Union of Pakistan (ESUP) and Chairman of the Trust for Malnutrition and Stunted and the Pakistan Association of Deaf.
A Trustee of the Rotary Foundation, he is a member of the Rotary International PolioPlus Committee and the TRF Grants Committee and Chairs the Rotary International PolioPlus National Committee for Pakistan and the Rotary Foundation Awards Review Committee.

Professor Simon L. Croft
Simon Croft is an Emeritus Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). He worked on the discovery and development of anti-infective drugs in academia, industry and public-private partnerships. His research work has led to new treatments for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) - in particular the parasitic disease leishmaniasis - that have reached the clinic. In addition, he worked on pharmaceutical formulations, predictive models for drugs and vaccines, drug resistance and over the past decade on NTD control programmes in endemic countries. He has been an advisor to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the UK Government, the European Union, the Wellcome Trust and other programmes on NTD research. Previously Simon was the Research and Development Director of the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi), Geneva, Dean of Faculty and Professor of Parasitology at the LSHTM and President of the British Society for Parasitology.
Lord Patel joined the House of Lords in 2006. His areas of policy interests are: Communities and families; Crime, civil law, justice and rights; Education; Health services and medicine; Illegal drug use; Mental health; Parliament, government and politics; Social services. Lord Patel is a qualified Social Worker, he worked in inner city Bradford and then established a number of Third Sector agencies working with those misusing drugs and those with mental health problems; later moving to academia working with a number of universities. On 19 March 2018, Lord Patel of Bradford was appointed by the Secretary of State for Education and the Secretary of State for Health & Social Care as the Chair of Social Work England. Social Work England will be the new regulator for all child, family and adult social workers in England. He is Vice Patron of the Royal Society for Public Health and the Institute of Healthcare Management; and Patron/Chairman of a number of not for profit organisations working in the health, education, social care and criminal justice sectors.
