Dr Leandro ValiatiSenior Policy Fellow
Leandro is an Economist, with a PhD in Development Economics and post-PhD in Creative Industries (Sorbonne-Paris 13). He was visiting Chair in the Economy of Culture in the School of English and Drama at Queen Mary from 2018-2020 and he is an Associate at both People’s Palace Projects and Network – Queen Mary’s Research Centre for the Creative and Cultural Economy. From September 2018 to September 2020, he held a Newton Advanced Fellowship from the British Academy for his research project with PPP at Queen Mary, Counting Culture. Leandro is an Advisory Board member at the UK’s national Policy and Evidence Centre for the Creative Industries (NESTA/AHRC), and also sits on the PEC’s International Board (convened by the British Council). Leandro’s permanent post is as Professor of Creative Industries and Economy of Culture at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). He has been an Advisor in Cultural and Creative Industries for Brazil’s Ministry of Culture, Argentina’s Ministry of Culture, UNESCO and OEI. He was the Creator of the Centre of Studies in Cultural and Creative Economy (NECCULT) at UFRGS. An international conference speaker and lecturer, he has presented in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

Sabin Khan has demonstrated a life-long commitment to public service through numerous positions of leadership within civil society, local authority and Government. Roberto AlvarezSenior Policy Fellow
Roberto Alvarez is a systems-thinker and doer who has been working at the intersections of technology, business, policy, global issues and communications for more than 25 years. A native of Brazil, he has worked and implemented joint initiatives with organizations and partners around the world throughout his career.
As a citizen, he is particularly concerned with how organisations and countries can innovate to “solve for sustainability” and societies can address an increasingly complex array of themes in the policy arena. His professional focus has been on convening cross-sector global groups of leaders to address economic and societal issues and building partnerships to accelerate innovation in technology, business models and institutions.Roberto currently serves as the Executive Director of the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils (GFCC), a global multi-stakeholder organization with a footprint in more than 30 nations. Before joining the GFCC, he was a Senior Manager at the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI), where he led innovation, internationalization and sectorial development initiatives. Roberto also worked as a management and operations consultant and is an author and organiser of publications on innovation, industrial development and manufacturing strategy and operations.He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, was trained in Quality and Productivity at the Japan Productivity Center and Exponential Technologies and the NASA AMES-based Singularity University. An avid advocate for children’s mental health and wellbeing, Zelna Lauwrens is active in influencing policy makers in multiple Common Wealth countries. With her background in Special Needs Education, School Counselling and Lecturing Behavioural Studies spanning over two decades, she has offered in-depth consultation to various institutions relating to resilience, leadership and peak performance in children. In 2003, Zelna founded The Kids Life Studio®, a global organisation with representatives in 27 countries which offers sustainable solutions to challenges children are facing through her Play Based Life Coaching model now translated into 4 languages. Makan FofanaPolicy Fellow
Makan Fofana is a designer and culturemaker from Paris. He is currently completing his Postgraduate thesis at the CNAM (Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers), which Catherine Fieschi (Counterpoint) is supervising.
Makan is involved in research on the relationship between community, design, and public policy. His focus has been on how design can help reimagine the future of fragile/segregated communities by thinking about public policy through a design lens. Makan Fofana’s research project is a comparative analysis of the effectiveness of policies designed to manage diverse communities in the Eastern Suburbs of Paris and the East End of London. His work dovetails with the GPI’s research on resilient communities. He is the founder of l’Hypercube, a community space that blends design and public policy.

Dr Simon TiberiSenior Policy Fellow
Simon is a Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases and Research Lead for the Department of Infection at Barts Health NHS Trust, London, UK.
He runs an Infectious Diseases clinic and ward, and holds an NTM clinic, HIV-TB and MDR-TB clinic.
Simon is currently principal investigator of the RECOVERY trial for Barts Health NHS trust. His expertise and research interests include Tuberculosis, antimicrobials, respiratory and emerging infections.
He is a member of several scientific groups, including the European Respiratory Society (Secretary for TB group), Global TB Network (vice chair of Consilium), and steering group member of the British Thoracic Society Specialist Advisory Group for Tuberculosis. He is also an editorial board member of the European Respiratory Journal, associate editor of the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease and a named author on over 120 peer reviewed publications.

Dr Manu MathurSenior Policy Fellow
Manu is a Dental Surgeon with a PhD in Epidemiology and Population Health from University College London and a Masters in Public Health with specialisation in Epidemiology from the University of Glasgow. He is currently working as Head: Health Policy and Additional Professor at Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), New Delhi and as Senior Lecturer in Dental Public Health at The University of Liverpool.
He has been a recipient of the prestigious Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholarship for the year 2010-11, a Wellcome Trust scholarship for his doctoral studies and a Wellcome Trust Mid-Career Fellowship to undertake work on psychosocial determinants of oral health inequalities in India.
He is a Commissioner on the recently constituted Lancet Commission on Global Oral Health, has many publications in leading international journals to his name and is the author of various book chapters.
His areas of expertise lies in Advanced Epidemiologic Methods, Operations and Health Systems and Policy Research and Health Promotion. He has been the principal investigator on many projects funded by Government of India, WHO, BMGF, USAID and NIH in the past and is currently leading large scale projects from MRC UK, Global Bridges Consortium and Government of India.

Dr Jonathan BashfordSenior Policy Fellow
Jon is an experienced senior manager, researcher and teacher with over 25 years’ experience working in health, social care and education in the public and voluntary sectors. Jon comes from a practitioner background as a Registered Mental Nurse and has been able to successfully bridge the gap between research, innovation and practice. He is currently Research Programme Director at Breaking Barriers Innovations, where is leading a number of projects on the social determinants of health and place.
Previously, Jon has been a Director at the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust where he had the lead responsibility for the development of the Communities, Rights and Inclusion programme known as CORIIN. Prior to working in Leicestershire, Jon was Associate Head at the International School for Communities, Rights and Inclusion (University of Central Lancashire) where he managed a wide range of research projects, learning and teaching programmes and commercial consultancies at regional, national and international levels.
Jon is particularly known for his work on mental health, veterans, drug and alcohol use, offender health and equality, human rights and organisational change. This has led to him being appointed an advisor on various government initiatives, including the national Prison Drug Treatment Strategy Review Group which produced the Patel Report. In 2008 Jon was granted the award of PhD for his work on institutional racism and organisational change.

Sherife HasanPolicy Fellow
Sherife is an experienced and highly skilled programme director with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in systems improvement and innovation. She has a wide-ranging career history and has worked at a national government policy level and at a local level as a social worker in both the statutory sector and the voluntary sector.
She worked within government departments for 11 years, in the Home Office and the Department of Health on drugs and alcohol policy and offender health policy. She was responsible for leading on and delivering a range of programmes, including the national drug system change pilot scheme and the independent Prison Drug Treatment Strategy Review Group, chaired by Professor Lord Patel of Bradford OBE.
Sherife has extensive knowledge and experience of successfully managing and delivering large-scale projects from their inception to final outcomes. She is currently a Senior Researcher for Breaking Barriers Innovations and the Research and Policy Officer for Lord Patel.

Professor Kamaldeep BhuiSenior Policy FellowKam is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at East London NHS Foundation Trust. He is the former Head of Centre for Psychiatry at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London and former Public Health Lead; he now Chairs the Publications Management Board at Royal College of Psychiatrists and is Editor in Chief of the British Journal of Psychiatry.
His research and clinical expertise includes social and cultural psychiatry, community psychiatry (assertive outreach and homeless care), epidemiology, health services research and psychological therapies (he is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist) and global health. His research seeks to prevent health inequalities, improving health services and public health interventions, and develop progressive health policy and legislation. He has written on and researched racism and ethnic inequalities in experiences and outcomes mental illnesses.
He studied Pharmacology (BSc) at UCL and Medicine (MBBS) at UMDS (Guy’s and St Thomas’, now King's College medical school) qualifying in 1988. He holds postgraduate qualifications in psychiatry, mental health studies, epidemiology, and psychotherapy. In partnership with colleagues in India and Kenya, Kam is developing family based intervention to improve youth resilience and mental health.

Farida FortuneSenior Policy Fellow
Farida Fortune is a Professor of Medicine in Relation to Oral Health and leads the Centre for Oral Immunobiology and Regenerative Medicine. She has a PhD in Medicine. Uniquely, she is on the Specialist list for both Oral Medicine in Dentistry (GDC) and Clinical Immunology in Medicine (GMC). She was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2007 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2009.
Within Queen Mary she has led the Dental School and Institute through seven successful years, with key outputs, in health outcomes, teaching and research outputs and student development. She also set up a nationally funded Centre of Excellence in Behcets Disease which has an EU, QA rating 97.2% and is held in high regard internationally for excellence in healthcare outcomes and translational research. She continues to work in a senior capacity in academic engagement nationally and internationally, enabling and supporting ongoing programmes.
She have proven experience in developing transnational networks, and establishing education and research facilities, and partnerships at both EU and UN level. A key is in supporting long term relationships using technology to assist LMICs; and the strategic development of healthcare teaching facilities via the African Union, building frameworks for transnational research with health and societal outcomes embedded and support for partner countries. This enables LMIC universities to eventually become resilient enough to lead multinational projects, with the long-term benefits to partner institutions of health, education and a more vibrant economy.

Professor Mario C. RaviglioneSenior Policy Fellow
Mario C. Raviglione is Full Professor of Global Health at the University of Milan, Italy, where is a founding director at the Centre for Multidisciplinary Research on Health Science (MACH) and coordinates the first Master in Global Health online in Italy. Until 2017, he worked at WHO where, starting in 2003, he was Director of the Global Tuberculosis (TB) Programme. In that role he was responsible for setting norms, policies and standards on global TB care, control and research, monitoring the global situation, and supporting country efforts. He directed the development of the global TB strategies, including the current End TB strategy in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). He served as WHO focal point for the health agenda at the G8 Summit in Italy in 2009. A graduate from Turin University, he trained in internal medicine and infectious diseases at Cabrini Medical Centre, New York, and on infectious diseases and AIDS at Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. He is one of the 10 most cited authors worldwide in TB, and has nearly 500 publications on TB, AIDS, infectious diseases, COVID-19 and global health. His production has been cited 62,000 times and his h-index is 112. He has worked with over 50 countries worldwide and has received international awards. He has been visiting professor and teacher at top universities worldwide. He is Honorary Professor at the Queen Mary University of London, UK, and was Professeur Titulaire at the Global Studies Institute, University of Geneva, until 2020.

Professor Allam AhmedSenior Policy FellowAllam is a Professor of Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development; Founding President of the World Association for Sustainable Development (WASD); Founding Director of the Middle Eastern Knowledge Economy Institute (MEKEI); Founder of the International Diaspora Initiative/Sudan Knowledge (SK); and the Founding Director of SDGs Universities International Initiative (SDGsUNI).
Professor Ahmed has worked in the field of international engagement and leadership in higher education institutions for almost 25 years. He spent 15 years (2004-2019) at the University of Sussex Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), where he established and led Sussex's postgraduate programme in MSc International Management.
His experience includes leading the first Knowledge Management Framework (Musharaka) for the Government of Abu Dhabi, leadership roles at several major public and private institutions and for various governments in SSA, Europe and MENA.
Professor Ahmed’s main areas of research focus on globalisation and competitiveness with topics relating to marketing; strategic management; entrepreneurship; and government macroeconomic policies, and the role of science, technology and innovation in achieving sustainable development.
He is published widely covering various disciplines and has produced more than 120 publications, including 39 books and numerous articles in international peer-reviewed journals, books, conferences proceedings and working papers, and is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of 10 international refereed journals.

Peter GaduelVisiting Rotary Associate Policy Fellow (2022)Peter Machieng Chan Gaduel is a Rotary Peace Fellow from the University of Bradford and a Visiting Rotary Associate Policy Fellow at Queen Mary University of London's Global Policy Institute.
He has over eight years of professional experience in peacekeeping and executing governance programmes. His most recent position includes aiding the UN Mission in South Sudan's situational awareness by providing conflict early warnings through local level engagements to prevent violence against civilians. Peter liaised with the state-level solution working groups (SWGs), which include a diverse range of actors such as humanitarian protection partners and national institutions to develop long-term solutions for the return, reintegration, and relocation of internally displaced people and refugees in South Sudan.
Between 2010 and 2013, Peter directed the orientation of local government administrative officers (LGAOs) in South Sudan, most of whom were former rebel fighters in public finance management, public service reforms, planning, and budgeting through the Sudan BRIDGE project, which was sponsored by USAID and implemented by Winrock International. He was later involved in implementing technical cooperation programmes with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in 2015.
Peter is a University of Bradford student pursuing a master's degree in International Relations and Security Studies (2021-2022). He also holds a Master of Arts in Public Policy and Management from the University of York (2019-2021) and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Public Administration from the University of Nairobi (2011-2016). Peter's research interests are motivated by global issues that impact on social violence.
