This module examines the debates on the idea of Europe taking place during the modern period (c.1700-1920s) within the disciplinary boundaries of intellectual, political and cultural history. It details the critical role of this idea in directing experiences of political change ranging from legal reform to revolution. In addition to providing students with an introduction to key events and concepts that ultimately anticipated and facilitated the dynamics of European integration, this course stimulates a critical understanding of the inherently transnational character of the political and intellectual life of modern Europe.
