This module explores the built fabric of London during the city’s transition from early modern capital to global, imperial, city. Beginning and ending with two moments of destruction (the Great Fire and the Blitz), the course charts the rapid growth of the Georgian city and the even more dramatic industrialization that followed in the nineteenth century. Along the way we will consider many different types of buildings, and explore questions of architectural style, the implications of social and cultural change for architecture, and urban and architectural history and theory more generally.
