Time: 2:00 - 6:00pm Venue: Queen Mary University London
While British cinema and television history are thriving fields of scholarship, the issue of stardom has been insufficiently explored in national terms, and most British star images suggest that the dominant Hollywood model, associated with individualism, glamour, and consumption, sits uneasily in a British cultural context.'Exploring British Film and Television Stardom' will readdress this subject, with papers from leading scholars in the field of British Cinema History. Keynote addresses from Andrew Spicer and Melanie Bell will consider the images and careers of Sean Connery and Julie Christie. Other topics to be covered will include British stars in Hollywood and contemporary American television, animated stardom, adaptation, performance, and a range of star identities from Anna Neagle to Danny Dyer.

Report on Exploring British Film and Television Stardom
This conference, co-organized by Adrian Garvey (PhD History) and Dr Julie Lobalzo Wright (QM Film Studies) was held at Queen Mary on November 1st and 2nd.
It was a lively, well-attended event, with 2 keynote addresses and 20 papers delivered which embraced a century of stardom, performance and national identity. Topics ranged from the cartoon stars of the World War One era to the use of contemporary British actors in American TV dramas such as Homeland.
The event was kindly supported by the History and Film Studies schools, and by the University’s Postgraduate Fund and Living British Cinema forum.
