On Friday 16 October at 12:00, Dr Rob Waters will be chairing an online event at the Mile End Institute exploring "New Directions in Black British History". This webinar will showcase the work of three emerging researchers, including a recent alumna of Queen Mary, Deanna Lyn Cook. Deanna is currently completing an MA on "Caribbean women in Britain, 1939-1990", and she also runs the History Hotline podcast, which focuses particularly on the events and individuals that have shaped black British history.
Rob and Deanna will be joined by Olivia Wyatt and Satya Gupta. Olivia is an MA student at Leeds, researching African-Caribbean women's activism in Leeds, and is a founding member of the Young Historians Project, a non-profit organisation which trains young historians of African descent and works on projects that document neglected aspects of Black British history. Satya is a PhD student at Birkbeck,researching race, ethnicity and the afterlife of the Empire in 1970s Britain: specifically the different ways that New Commonwealth migrants and their children articulated new ways of belonging in Britain. He is also the author of the HisnameisSatya blog.
