Naomi Billingsley on 'Extra-Illustrating the Macklin Bible'.
Naomi is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the John Rylands Research Institute, at the University of Manchester. Her monograph The Visionary Art of William Blake: Christianity, Romanticism and the Pictorial Imagination was published in spring 2018. She is now working on a project that investigates the formation and reception of the Macklin Bible (1789-1800) in the context of religious visual culture of the Romantic period.
This paper will explore the Bowyer Bible – the forty-five-volume copy of the Macklin Bible that was extra-illustrated by fellow printseller Robert Bowyer between c.1801 and 1826. It will put the Bowyer Bible in context, with a brief survey of other extra-illustrated Macklin Bibles, and situate this narrative in relation to the craze for extra-illustration in late eighteenth century Britain.
Time: 5.00-7.00pm.
Venue: Seminar Room, Lock-Keeper’s Cottage Graduate Centre, Queen Mary University of London, Mile End, London, E1 4NS.
