Report on The Biennial Queen Mary Symposium in American History
An international symposium exploring the latest directions in American History took place at Queen Mary University of London in June 2013. Bringing together scholars from across Britain and the US, this one-day event provided an opportunity for participants to share their latest research on the history of the United States and showcased new work on US imperialism, politics and cultural production in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The event was a part of the Queen Mary American History Symposia series, inaugurated in 2012 in collaboration with one of the leading international scholars in the field of American History, Professor Eric Foner of Columbia University.
Professor Foner’s longstanding relationship with the School of History was celebrated in 2012, when the university awarded Foner with an honorary degree and launched a new series of symposia that took their inspiration from Professor Foner’s outstanding body of work.
The QM Symposia in American History connects scholars from the US and the UK whose research explores any aspect of politics and power, race relations or freedom and democracy in the US. By deliberately moving beyond the conventional boundaries of periodization and regionalism the symposia are opportunities to generate productive conversations on the direction of new research in US history.

The event was hosted by QMUL historians Prof. Mark White, Dr. Jo Cohen, Dr. James Ellison, Dr. Mark Glancy and Dr. Daniel Peart with the support of the School of History.
