School of History ranked as the country’s top history department for social mobility

The School of History at Queen Mary University of London has been ranked as the country’s top history department for social mobility, according to a new report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies in partnership with the Sutton Trust and Department for Education.

Published:

The study looked at the proportion of students from low-income backgrounds at each university, and whether those students have moved up to the top of the income ladder by age 30. Using this data, each university is then given a “mobility rate”.

The School of History recorded the highest mobility rate amongst history departments at 2.4%. The average mobility rate across all English history departments in the study was 0.6%.

Professor Dan Todman, Head of the School of History said; ‘We feel pride that making a difference to our students' lives remains a great shared motivating ethos of the School. When I talk to colleagues about what they value about being here, this is the point that comes out again and again. It is wonderful, therefore, to see evidence of our achievement in this regard.’

The full report can be found on the Sutton Trust website.
