Research

Research Interests:

I am interested in the history of Britain and Europe during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and in unifying the scales of national, continental, and global history, as well as establishing the Balkans as an integral region to the wider arc of European history. My research focuses on British and Irish observers of the wider world, and how they interpreted global events through the prism of their own local debates and concerns. I am also interested in the concept of progress in nineteenth-century political discourse, and how this was linked to contested racial or civilisational identities.
