PhD applicants to the School of History are eligible to apply for a range of scholarships. Queen Mary also offers successful applicants the opportunity to apply for additional funding on arrival.
Please note that, with the exception of the Principal's Studentship competition and Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Studentships, all funding schemes require you to apply separately for your place at QMUL, which you must already have been offered before you can secure funding.
Each year, QMUL offers fully-funded research studentships to support the next generation of leading academics.
Duration and extent of award: up to 3 years full time, covering tuition fees and a maintenance stipend at the UKRI London rate

Eligibility: LAHP studentships are open to Home and International (including EU) applicants. Funding is available for both full- and part-time students. Applicants must have secured an offer of admission to a PhD programme at QMUL before applying for LAHP funding. A minimum of 5 studentships across LAHP’s open competition will be awarded to Home status Black and Global Majority students for entry in October 2025.
Collaborative Doctoral Awards (CDAs) provide funding for doctoral studentship projects, developed as a partnership between an HEI-based academic in collaboration with an organisation outside higher education (e.g. a museum). CDA projects provide opportunities for doctoral students to gain first-hand experience of work outside the university environment and enhance the employment-related skills and training a research student gains during the course of their studies. CDA projects also encourage and establish links that can have long-term benefits for both collaborating partners, providing access to resources and materials, knowledge and expertise that may not otherwise have been available, as well as social, cultural and economic benefits to wider society.
Duration and extent of award: up to 3.5 years full time, covering tuition fees, a maintenance stipend and access to research training support.
Eligibility: Applications must be completed and submitted by the doctoral candidate’s prospective academic supervisor at QMUL and not by the student themselves. Doctoral projects must involve collaboration with a non-HEI partner, which should be identified at the time of application.

Duration and extent of award: up to 3 years full time, covering tuition fees (Home rate only) and a maintenance stipend.
Eligibility: Studentships are only available for students who meet the residency requirements set out by the ESRC. Proposed research must be at least 50% social science (but can have a strong interdisciplinary component). Applicants must have secured an offer of admission to a PhD programme at QMUL before applying for LISS funding.
Duration and extent of award: up to 4 years full time, covering tuition fees, a maintenance stipend and one return flight. Remote study can be supported under extreme circumstances (COVID-19), but stipend payments will not be made until students arrive in the UK.
Eligibility: The CSC accepts applications from Chinese nationals (PRC only; not Hong Kong or Taiwan). Applicants must have secured an offer of admission to a PhD programme at QMUL before applying for CSC funding. Continuing students in their first year of study can apply for funding for years 2-4 of their programme.

Eligibility: Applicants must be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country and be able to show evidence of permanent residence in that country.
