Robin Brooke Centre
The Robin Brook Centre (RBC) is a Queen Mary academic building situated in the West Smithfield Campus (Barts Hospital premises). The building is fully maintained and operated by Queen Mary therefore Queen Mary procedures apply throughout the building.
As this building is a multi-department use building with heavy student use of lecture theatres, rooms and clinical skills laboratories, this page details key Health & Safety and Fire Safety information that all staff, students and visitors are expected to be aware of.
Line Managers, academic supervisors and the Queen Mary host person of an event conducted in the RBC are expected to ensure all necessary H&S measures are in place for their activity.
The following information is provided to assist maintaining effective Health & Safety and Fire Safety in the building and is provided as a downloadable format here.
- Evacuate Building to the Fire Assembly Point (Fountain Square).
- Responsible Person to CALL 999 and ask for the London Fire Brigade.
- Inform the London Fire Brigade that there is a fire incident in the
Robin Brook Centre Building, Giltspur St, Barts Hospital, London EC1A 7BE
- Queen Mary Security are automatically notified of a fire activation and will proceed to the building.
- Upon London Fire Brigade arrival, escort them to RBC foyer.
- Do not permit re-entry of the building until London Fire Brigade give the all clear.
- Obtain any written report from the London Fire Brigade and forward to Queen Mary Security mile-end-security@qmul.ac.uk
- Refuge points are found in each stairwell landing.
- Each refuge call point goes to the communication point next to the red fire control panel at reception.
If you need an Ambulance CALL 999.
- Provide building location: Robin Brook Centre Building, Giltspur St, Barts Hospital, London EC1A 7BE
- State the nature of the injury / illness.
- Call Queen Mary Security on 0207 882 3333 and ask for assistance (e.g. to guide ambulance).
- Ask a colleague to wait outside the building for the ambulance and to escort the paramedics to you and the casualty.
- Remain with the casualty at all times. Should the situation worsen, call 999 again and inform ambulance control of the change.
- Do not move the casualty unless there is immediate risk to life (smoke, fire, violence, chemicals) or the emergency services have instructed you to do so.
- First aid boxes are provided on each floor of the Robin Brook Centre, in each floor foyer locations.
- Contact details of Building Based First Aiders and any local first aiders are noted on these notices.
- If you need the Police CALL 999.
- Provide building location (as per ‘fire incidents’ above) and nature of the threat.
- Then call Queen Mary Security on 0207 882 3333 and ask for assistance.

If the RBC Front desk is not manned by a Queen Mary staff member, security assistance and on duty maintenance assistance can also be called 24/7 by calling the Charterhouse Square Security Office on 0207 7882 6020 (Queen Mary Charterhouse Square Security Office is based at the Dawson Hall, Front Entrance) or in an emergency as noted above.

‘Out of hours’ room / event bookings in the RBC must be approved in advance by Queen Mary Health & Safety Directorate with an approved fire safety / H&S risk assessment - see details and an example generic risk assessment that you can use and adapt for your event at http://www.hsd.qmul.ac.uk/a-z/events-safety/. Approval will be notified to Teaching Room Bookings team and EAF.
‘Out of hours’ for this building for H&S/Fire Safety purposes are 8 pm to 8 am on working weekdays and all day on weekends, bank or public holidays / Queen Mary closure days.
Please note that assistance based in the RBC building (e.g. fire marshals, first aiders, Centre / Office Managers) will be very limited outside of the normal ‘office hours’ of 9 am – 5 pm on working weekdays.
