Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) Training REFRESHER - HS027
This course covers the following content as a refresher session for existing RPSs at Queen Mary.
- Concepts of Ionising Radiation Protection.
- The Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 – key requirements including RPS role and duties.
- Risk assessments and Local Rules (as refresher assessment)
- Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 – key requirements.
- Queen Mary local arrangements for Ionising Radiation Protection.
- Inspections (as refresher assessment).
- Emergency and contingency scenarios (as refresher assessment).
The course is conducted by the Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) team for Queen Mary and the Queen Mary Radiation Protection Officer (RPO). The content adheres to the HSE guidance syllabus.
Duration:
Refresher course: Minimum 5 hours classroom time plus successful completion of an online knowledge quiz (open book) on QMPlus in attendee’s own time (approximately 30 - 45 min).
Objectives: fulfils the core competence criteria noted in the HSE guidance.
- To understand the concepts of Ionising Radiation Protection
- To understand the nature of ionising radiation interaction with tissue
- To understand the measurement and activity of Ionising Radiation
- To know the relevant measurement techniques
- To know the basic legal requirements for Ionising Radiation Protection
- To know the basic principles of practical radiation protection
- To know the key requirements of the Queen Mary policy, management systems and local rules
- To know the procedures for incidents, contingencies, emergencies and reporting.
Certification: An online completion certificate will be generated upon satisfactory completion (pass mark 80% or greater) of the online knowledge quiz on QMPlus by the attendee. The access details for the online knowledge quiz will be provided by the course tutor.
This course is not accredited by any training accreditation body.
Suitability: Only open to existing Queen Mary appointed RPSs / Deputy RPSs. Attendee list will be vetted and confirmed beforehand by the Queen Mary RPO. See RPS appointment form and duties on the Radiation: Ionising topic page.
New RPSs / Deputy RPSs are directed to appropriate external providers for initial training by the RPO.
Requalification / Refresher: Attendance and completion by existing Queen Mary RPSs/ Deputy RPSs once every 3 years. Please book via the CPD system.
